New Distribution Capability - Start Selling Flights Online Today

The NDC Standard provides the opportunity to address the end-to-end airline distribution process, such as shopping, booking, and so on, and provide enhanced customer experiences.

What is NDC?

NDC, or New Distribution Capability, is a travel industry standard for flight content distribution and retailing that applies to airlines, aggregators, and travel sellers.

New Distribution Capability is a technology standard developed by the IATA to improve communications between airlines and travel sellers and transform the way air products are retailed to leisure and business travelers. NDC is not a system, database, or piece of software; it is a data exchange standard and is open to any third party, intermediary, or IT provider to use.

IATA, the International Air Transportation Association, recognized an opportunity to create a new data exchange standard based on XML, allowing for a better flight shopping, booking, and post-booking experience.

XML allows for greater flexibility in passing information from airline reservation systems to travel sellers, including rich content. It is widely used in the IT industry around the globe, allowing for improved collaboration and accessibility. By making NDC a standard, rather than having each airline design its API, the approach can be streamlined to make it faster and easier to go to market.

The NDC Standard covers offer management and order management:

Offer Management

Offer management refers to airline capabilities for how they distribute their full product offerings and merchandise additional services such as baggage, seat selection, or ancillaries using rich content.

Order Management

Order management refers to airline capabilities related to managing NDC-driven orders from booking to fulfilment.

Using New Distribution Capability (NDC) To Transform Travel

New Distribution Capability (NDC) is a popular entrant in the technological era that aims to bridge the gap between airlines and travel agents, OTAs, TMCs, and travel consultants.

The adoption of NDC in the airline industry results in a more efficient system that benefits airlines, agents, GDSs, travel start-ups, and customers worldwide. IATA is committed to using the NDC system to provide its customers with immediacy, individualism, and inspiration throughout the shopping and flight booking process.

A new global B2B marketplace connects airlines and air content providers with travel agents to accelerate the adoption of IATA NDC transactions. The NDC's goal is to improve airline product differentiation by allowing them to make personalized offers, display different content and branding for each airline, particularly for ancillary services, and provide a transparent purchasing process.

The success of this initiative depends to a large extent on airlines and partners adhering to IATA standards and accessing the necessary certifications to distribute content. The IATA NDC complements the merchandising technology with rich content and branding and continues to work closely with IATA and the airline industries to deliver industry-leading content via travel commerce platforms.

NDC adds content to third-party booking platforms by connecting travelers directly to an airline's unique product offerings such as ancillaries, servicing, and bundles. Travelers get access to the same choice, personalization, and transparent pricing they get directly with the airline as well as unique and customized offers to suit their preferences needs.

The value of NDC is fully beneficial to both travel agents and the airline industry. By leveraging a rich content view of travel options and greater transparency across carriers, travel agencies and travel suppliers can personalize the end-to-end experience – shopping inspiration, ticketing, fulfillment, along with the ability to efficiently manage air bookings across the entire workflow.

The airline ticket is transformed into a journey or an experience, enhancing the ability of airlines and travel agents to communicate with one another. Adoption of NDC will allow airlines and travel agents to have greater transparency across touchpoints such as airfare, car rental, hotel, and so on. It will also help with customer engagements along the way.

NDC is an excellent technology for tailoring an end-to-end travel experience to the preferences of their customers. From low-cost carriers to hotel booking agencies to airlines distribution channels, effective corporate travel systems and the travel management companies that enable their success have long had to—and will continue to—embrace the reality of sourcing content (fares, fare classes, rates, amenities, etc.) from multiple channels.

Our goal is to maximize content quality, rates, and the traveler booking experience while also assisting customers in understanding current challenges in content distribution and working with them to mitigate the impact of those challenges.

NDC Benefits for Airlines

1. Improve product differentiation from rich content

Rich content includes a variety of media formats, including images, video, sound, and even virtual or augmented reality. From an airline perspective, they could also include longer descriptions, highlight reviews, highlight promotional offerings, or differentiate their loyalty tiers, making it easier to demonstrate the value of a particular flight, route, or airline offers.

2. Better management costs

Airlines working with GDSs have many costs, so the transition to NDC allows for long-term savings and better cost management for fees and incentives. They also have greater pricing flexibility and more opportunities for upselling to maximize revenue. Airlines can also manage their internal costs better after the implementation of NDC through quicker releases of future projects and improved processes (e.g. payments). With the ability to increase the speed of go to market, airlines can also capitalize on potential revenue early as they can now merchandise the new offering the same day they launch.

3. Increase level of personalization

With NDC, airlines can manage the flow of information and better highlight fare options and extras. With improved capability and control on how information is shared, airlines have more autonomy and can determine who gets what, what they get, and when they get it. It unlocks the potential for personalization and dynamic pricing - which could be seen through offering special prices targeted at customers based on their loyalty to an airline tailored to a particular corporate's needs.

The NDC Program

New Distribution Capability (NDC) is a travel industry-supported program launched by IATA for the development and market adoption of a new XML-based data transmission standard (NDC Standard).

The NDC Standard improves the ability of airlines and travel agencies to communicate with one another. The NDC Standard is freely implementable and usable by any third party, intermediary, IT provider, or non-IATA member.

By addressing the industry's current distribution limitations, the NDC Standard enables the travel industry to transform the way air products are retailed to corporations, leisure, and business travelers.

  • Product differentiation and time to market

  • Access to complete and rich air content

  • Transparent shopping experience

Why do airlines develop new distribution channels?

  • Gain more control over their distribution strategy to allow differentiated offerings and reduce reliance on third-party distributors.

  • Generate new revenue from expanded offerings, such as ancillary products and services, to differentiate and market beyond a simple, text-based price sort.

  • Save through shifting and recovering distribution costs by applying surcharges in the GDS system and leveraging commercial negotiations with distribution companies.

  • Increase traveler engagement by gaining insight into shopper preferences and delivering personalized offers.

What’s the difference between GDS and NDC?

NDC: New Distribution Capability; an IATA-led initiative that uses an XML-based data transmission standard and is intended to improve the airlines’ ability to sell and market its products, allowing airlines to make personalized offers and to sell ancillary products (like baggage fees, pre-assigned seats, boarding privileges, etc.) in the travel agency channel rather than only on its website

Global distribution system; a primary reservation tool used by travel agents and services to book airline tickets, hotel rooms, rental cars, etc.; many GDS companies initially did not support NDC, but as more airlines continue to forge ahead with it, the GDSs have begun adopting the new standard themselves

However, NDC is purely related to what the airlines offer. Some airlines provide unique NDC content that is not available in GDS. This feature makes transactions between airlines and travel agencies easier.

GDS stands for Global Distribution System, and it acts as an intermediary between a travel agent and the airline. GDS is a reservation system that allows travel agents to book, change, or cancel tickets. GDS also allows travel agents to book hotel and car reservations.

BookingXML increases revenue for airlines, travel agencies, and third-party vendors. With our NDC-based solutions, we improve traveler purchasing experiences and significantly increase airline ancillary sales while lowering distribution costs. We provide NDC-based IT solutions and content aggregation services to airlines, travel agents, and third-party vendors in the travel industry.

We have vast domain knowledge and experience in connecting NDC to any airline reservation system, connect to their API, transform any message type to NDC standard XML and empower travel agencies to offer all the content to their clients, sub-agents, etc.

With our NDC-based solutions, we improve travelers' buying experience, significantly increase airline ancillary sales, and reduce distribution costs. GDS system undoubtedly is the backbone of the travel industry. They serve as the primary link between the various travel industry service providers such as airlines, hotels, car rental companies, and travel agencies/agents.

All major travel service providers share their service catalog with a GDS, which allows travel agencies and agents to access this information for booking airline tickets, hotels, rental cars, cruises, and rail, among many others. The three major GDS in the market are Sabre, Amadeus and Travelport GDS.

For and by the travel industry.

The NDC Standard is supported by airlines, travel management companies, online travel agencies, corporate buyers, global distribution systems, and other technology players.

Through a collaborative approach, participants ensure that the supporting schemas are functional and can be used by all, regardless of business focus, geographic location, size, target markets, or individual commercial policies.

So, NDC enables airlines to directly replicate content from their website to the travel agent channel, benefiting themselves, the travel agent, and you, the customer.
